Empowering children with disabilities: A call to make a difference

At NJO Foundation Africa, we believe that every child deserves an equal chance to succeed, no matter their background or circumstances. That’s why we’re committed to improving the lives of children in Uganda and across Africa by providing access to education, sanitary supplies, clothing, clean water, mental health support, and more. However, some children face even greater challenges, particularly those living with disabilities

Children with disabilities often face physical, social, and economic barriers that make everyday life much harder. Mukisa and Shanita are two such children whose stories highlight the struggles many children with disabilities face just to have a chance at an education.

Mukisa's Story

Mukisa is a 14 year old boy who, due to limited mobility, depends on others to carry him to school. His physical condition makes it incredibly difficult for him to participate in school activities or even sit through lessons comfortably. The lack of mobility is not just a physical barrier—it also sets him apart from his peers, making it more challenging for him to fully engage in social and educational activities. Mukisa has the potential to achieve great things, but without basic mobility, his dreams remain out of reach.

Shanita's Story

Shanita, a 13 year old girl from Namayingo, was born with underdeveloped feet, which makes it difficult for her to walk normally. Every day, she crawls on all fours just to get to school. Despite her pain and the exhaustion of crawling long distances, Shanita is determined to pursue her education and not let her disability stand in the way of her dreams. However, the journey to school is not only physically draining but also emotionally taxing. No child should have to endure such daily hardships just to receive an education.

The power of accessibility: How NJO Foundation Africa is making a difference

At NJO Foundation Africa, we are committed to creating a world where every child has access to education, healthcare, and the basic resources they need to thrive. For Mukisa, Shanita, and many other children with disabilities, we’re providing the tools they need to overcome mobility barriers and lead more independent, fulfilling lives.

We believe in empowerment through accessibility. This includes providing wheelchairs for children like Mukisa and Shanita so that they can move freely and comfortably, without relying on others. But our work doesn’t stop there. We offer a range of programs that help children access education, receive medical care, and engage in their communities.

The importance of education and community support

Access to education is a fundamental right for all children, but for children with disabilities, this can be a challenge. Many schools lack the infrastructure and resources needed to support children with mobility issues, which is why NJO Foundation Africa works directly with communities to provide inclusive educational resources, training, and assistance.

Education isn’t just about academic learning it’s also about building confidence, independence, and social skills. By enabling children with disabilities to attend school independently, we give them the opportunity to socialize with their peers, participate in group activities, and ultimately develop the skills they need to succeed in life.

The impact of a wheelchair

A wheelchair might seem like a small thing, but for Mukisa and Shanita, it represents so much more than just mobility. It symbolizes independence, access to education, and freedom. With a wheelchair, Mukisa will no longer have to be carried to school—he’ll be able to go by himself, sitting comfortably in a chair designed to meet his needs. For Shanita, a wheelchair will remove the exhausting and painful task of crawling to school every day, allowing her to preserve her energy for her studies and to engage more fully in her childhood.

The benefits extend beyond just the physical improvements. Having access to a wheelchair will provide both Mukisa and Shanita with a greater sense of dignity and self-worth. It will improve their social and emotional well-being, as they’ll no longer feel like outsiders or burdened by their disability.

How NJO Foundation Africa is changing lives

At NJO Foundation Africa, we do more than just provide wheelchairs. We focus on long-term, sustainable impact by creating programs that empower children and their families. This includes providing not only physical resources like wheelchairs but also mental health support, school supplies, vocational training, and clean water.

By ensuring access to these basic services, we’re not only helping children with disabilities; we’re creating a ripple effect that extends throughout their families and communities. The support we offer helps break the cycle of poverty and disability, paving the way for brighter futures.
